UK-based e-mobility start-up OX Delivers has signed a $163m contract to establish its first franchise partner, OX East Africa, enabling it to
accelerate its business model and deliver affordable, reliable ‘transport-as-a-service’ in five countries across East Africa.
This milestone deal includes providing a fleet of purpose-built electric trucks, a subscription to OX’s proprietary tech platform, and vehicle maintenance services. The agreement enables OX Delivers to extend its operations from Rwanda to Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Burundi.
The new franchise will assume responsibility for OX Delivers’ existing operations in Rwanda, which recorded $920,000 in revenue during the first 10 months of 2024. The company’s transport-as-a-service model has proven highly successful, offering customers, including smallholder farmers, an efficient alternative to traditional transportation methods like buses and bicycles.
Simon Davis, CEO and Co-Founder of OX Delivers, highlighted the significance of the agreement, describing it as a transformative step toward scaling their business and expanding access to affordable and sustainable transport across the Global South. Davis added: “The potential we’ve unlocked in Rwanda showcases the immense opportunity to replicate this model in neighboring countries.”
Colin Tebbett, the newly appointed CEO of OX East Africa, emphasised the franchise’s capacity to generate social and economic growth. “Our service has already increased sales for some customers fivefold in Rwanda,” he noted, underscoring the company’s commitment to delivering accessible logistics solutions in underserved markets.
Since launching in 2021, OX Delivers has supported over 5,000 customers with its innovative, low-cost electric trucks. Designed for challenging road conditions in developing regions, the trucks operate at a fraction of the cost of conventional vehicles. The flat-pack OX Delivers trucks are shipped on pallets and assembled either at or near their destination. Equipped with a 74 kWh battery, the trucks deliver a range of over 90 miles (150 km) and can handle a substantial payload of 4,400 pounds (2,000kg).
With its first franchise partnership and production ramping up in the UK, OX Delivers is set to expand its reach, targeting over three billion people in the Global South who lack affordable transportation
