British truck producer Hydrogen Vehicle Systems (HVS) has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Spanish renewable energy project developer Kopala International to supply left-hand drive hydrogen-electric HGVs under HVS’s Transition to Zero Programme.
The agreement includes plans for Kopala to pre-order 50 hydrogen-powered trucks following an initial testing phase.
The vehicles will operate in a proposed hydrogen corridor connecting five Spanish cities: Barcelona, Zaragoza, Madrid, Valencia, and Murcia. This route is part of the HydrogenizingBCN initiative, launched in 2020 to develop hydrogen infrastructure across the Iberian Peninsula.
Phil Henrick, Chief Commercial Officer at HVS, said: ”Kopala International’s commitment to this programme is a testament to the growing appetite for hydrogen solutions in European logistics, and we’re proud to be leading this effort with our cutting-edge FCEV technology.”
Jeffrey Dost, CEO of Kopala International, emphasised the partnership with HVS would enable Kopala to position itself as “early adopters of hydrogen-powered logistics” and added that ”we are eager to take part in their Transition to Zero Programme”.
The project’s first phase includes constructing a hydrogen production facility in Barcelona. According to project documents, the plant will have:
- 20 megawatts of green hydrogen production capacity
- Ability to fuel up to 200 hydrogen vehicles
- Targeted completion date of early 2027
The agreement aligns with Spain’s broader hydrogen strategy. The country aims to install 11 gigawatts of hydrogen production capacity by 2030, currently the highest target in Europe. To support this goal, the European Commission has authorized €1.2 billion in Spanish state aid for renewable hydrogen development.
Spain’s national “Hydrogen Roadmap” outlines several objectives as part of the country’s plan to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, including developing new industrial supply chains and creating jobs in the green energy sector.
