US truck manufacturer Mack has announced its medium-duty Mack MD Electric is now available for order, marking the company’s second foray into the battery-electric vehicle market. The MD Electric is the manufacturer’s first electric model in the medium-duty segment and is designed for US vehicle classes 6 and 7.
The Mack MD Electric, initially revealed in March, is a variation of the diesel-powered version introduced in 2020. Both the Class 6 and Class 7 variants boast a power output of up to 194kW and offer two battery options. The nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) oxide lithium-ion batteries come in 150kWh and 240kWh configurations, providing approximate ranges of 150 and 230 miles (240 and 370 kilometers) respectively.
The Mack MD Electric is the manufacturer’s second electric vehicle, following the LR Electric heavy-duty truck, which primarily serves the waste management industry. Production of the LR Electric began in late 2021 at Mack’s Macungie plant in Pennsylvania, USA.
While Mack has not disclosed the pricing details for either model, interested parties are encouraged to contact their local dealership in the US for further information. However, Mack does mention that the MD Electric has received approval to participate in California’s Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project (HVIP). The project aims to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission trucks by providing point-of-sale vouchers to enhance the affordability of advanced technologies.
