Waste management company PreZero is expanding its electric vehicle fleet with 30 new collection trucks across nine locations in the Netherlands. The company is also implementing an innovative overhead charging system, marking a first for the industry in the country.

The company has developed a space-saving solution by installing charging facilities above the vehicles at various locations. This design allows six trucks to park side-by-side, compared to traditional setups where charging stations are placed between every two vehicles. The new charging plazas have already been installed in Berkel en Rodenrijs and Amsterdam, with more locations to follow.

Iwan te Winkel, COO of PreZero Nederland, addressed the challenges of grid congestion: “Standing still in sustainability is not an option. Together, we have ambitious goals to achieve, in the interest of the planet. Despite the current problems surrounding grid congestion, we therefore do not consider it an option to postpone the electrification of our fleet.”

This expansion follows the addition of 10 electric trucks to PreZero’s fleet in Duiven in 2023.

The company is implementing several initiatives to reduce emissions and transport movements:

  • Green collective: Combining routes with other collection companies
  • Return logistics: Using delivery vans to collect waste from city centres
  • Experimenting with hydrogen-powered vehicles

Te Winkel emphasised the company’s broader mission: “As a driver of the circular economy, we strive to turn waste into new raw materials. Because we believe in Zero Waste. In doing so, we also increasingly limit our co2 emissions and the number of transport movements to a minimum when collecting waste.”
