Cambridgeshire haulier Welch’s has bolstered the British Antarctic Survey’s (BAS) environmental research efforts by introducing an electric HGV to support polar expedition logistics.
The Welch Group, which has collaborated with BAS for two decades, deployed its new Renault E Tech T 100% electric HGV in October to transport scientific equipment from Cambridge to Harwich and across the UK.
‘It’s quite a privilege to be able to help an organisation like BAS, who exist to research how our planet can be more sustainable,” said MD Chris Welch. ”Their polar expeditions aboard the RRS Sir David Attenborough are legendary - but we strongly feel we can all contribute to green solutions in practical ways.”
Aaron Makinson, Warehouse and Storage Manager at BAS, highlighted the long-standing partnership between the two organisations: “BAS has worked with Welch’s for many years to support our logistics operations. We are excited to collaborate with a haulier that is making significant strides towards sustainability.”
Welch’s logistics support encompasses a diverse range of scientific equipment, from heavy machinery like Pisten Bulleys and wheel loaders to essential living supplies for Antarctic research stations.
Joshua Welsh, UK Assistant Project Manager for BAS, noted the collaborative approach to reducing carbon emissions, mentioning the use of LoadHogg lids with integrated ratchet straps to further minimise the project’s environmental impact.
The Renault electric HGV is part of the UK government’s Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) Programme and joined Welch’s fleet in October.
Welch, who was recently recognised as one of the Top 5 Motor Transport decarbonisation Power Players of 2024, emphasised the company’s commitment to sustainable logistics.
“I’m proud to offer green logistics options for our clients,” Welch said. “Providing the British Antarctic Survey with the right transport solution for their net zero targets makes me very happy.”
