Nexeon, a battery materials company based in the UK, has partnered with Panasonic Energy, a Panasonic Group company, to supply its advanced silicon-based anode material. This material has the potential to significantly increase the energy density of lithium-ion cells by up to 50%, resulting in enhanced battery performance for electric vehicles (EVs).
The long-term supply agreement between Nexeon and Panasonic aims to utilise the silicon anode material in lithium-ion cells for EVs starting from 2025. By incorporating this material, Panasonic can address key consumer concerns related to EVs, such as range anxiety and charging time, without requiring major changes to the manufacturing process or significant capital investment.
Increasing the energy density of lithium-ion batteries will lead to improved EV performance, including increased vehicle range and reduced charging time. This advancement also offers potential cost savings for automotive manufacturers in their EV battery pack systems.
