The state-of-the-art facility, covering 17,000 square metres, will begin large-scale battery production for fully electric trucks and buses in April 2025. The project represents a total investment of around €100 million and is set to create nearly 350 new jobs.

“The drives of the future are being created in Nuremberg,” said MAN Truck & Bus CEO Alexander Vlaskamp. “Not only are we developing batteries here, but in a few months’ time we will also be using the latest technologies to mass-produce them.”

The facility will initially produce up to 50,000 batteries annually, with potential expansion to 100,000 high-voltage batteries by 2030. It will feature over 50 manual and automated assembly stations and seven test benches for quality assurance.

Notably, MAN will be the first commercial vehicle manufacturer in Germany to establish its own battery series production. The Free State of Bavaria is supporting the project with approximately 30 million euros in funding, including innovative laser welding technology developed in collaboration with the Technical University of Munich.

Ingo Essel, Head of the MAN site in Nuremberg, described the project as “a decisive step into the future,” leveraging the company’s decades of engine development expertise to establish a centre of excellence for alternative drive technologies.

The topping-out ceremony was attended by key stakeholders, including Bavarian Minister President Markus Söder, Nuremberg’s Lord Mayor Marcus König, and MAN executives.
