Beverley-based haulier Nigel Rice Transport & Storage has taken delivery of its first electric truck, a Renault Trucks E-Tech D16 4x2.

Supplied by Alistair Mann, Hull area sales manager at Thompson Commercials, the company decided to invest in the electric truck following a positive trial period with Vertellus’ EV discovery programme.

Chris Rice, MD at Nigel Rice Transport & Storage said: “Thompson Commercials consistently delivers outstanding service. Their team is approachable, knowledgeable, and attentive to our needs, which made choosing Renault Trucks for our first electric truck a natural decision.”

During the three-month trial period, Nigel Rice Transport & Storage was able to test an electric truck to see how it would fit into the fleet’s operations on a long term basis. A DC Zenobē charger was installed to charge the vehicle.

Rice said: “The Vertellus trial was pivotal. Initially, we were hesitant about transitioning to electric, but the smooth implementation and driver training eased those concerns. Although range anxiety was a challenge at first, it quickly dissipated as we grew more confident in the vehicle’s capabilities.

“We’re actively exploring the option of adding more electric vehicles to our local network distribution fleet as they come up for renewal. Electric vehicles are ideal for our designated urban routes, where their efficiency and reduced emissions really make a difference. With the Renault Trucks E-Tech D16’s range and payload capacity well-suited to our daily requirements, we expect it to be a strong asset for our local deliveries.”

The new rigid was bodied by Martin Williams (Hull) with an 8m curtainsider and tuckaway tail lift. Its special electric livery was designed by Matt Vinyl Graphics. The E-Tech D16 has a 265kWh battery and electric motor which offers maximum power up to 185kW (248hp) and continuous power of 130kW (174hp), maximum torque is rated at 425Nm. The vehicle can be charged at speeds between 22kW to 150kW. Charging will take place at the company’s depot overnight and the truck will cover around 75 miles during the day working on local Palletline deliveries and collections.

Rice added: “We’re proud to lead the charge towards a cleaner, greener future. This investment, as well as a Renault Trucks E-Tech Master with a curtainsider body that we have on order, underscores our dedication to delivering exceptional customer service while minimising our environmental impact. It’s an exciting step forward for our business and the customers we serve.”
