In an industry first, Welch’s Transport has successfully trialed cross-sector charging infrastructure by powering its new Renault eTech T electric truck at First Bus’s Leicester depot. This pioneering collaboration marks the first time a freight operator has used a public transport depot’s charging facilities for an eHGV, demonstrating how shared infrastructure could revolutionise the path to sustainable transport across both sectors
“This charge isn’t just about logistics,” said Chris Welch, Managing Director of Welch’s Transport. “It’s about showing how public and freight transport can work hand-in-hand to build a network that meets our collective goals. Without the Leicester depot, this particular electric run simply wouldn’t be possible. Our collaboration with First Bus illustrates what’s achievable when we share resources and expertise.”
Although the exercise was deemed a one-off trial, Welch’s strategy is to create a ”comprehensive network that makes regional and national electric operations a reality”. Jamie Sands, Head of Solutions at Welch’s, told FCZ: ”This includes utilising bus depots, haulier partners, local services, and public infrastructure. Given our ad-hoc operational basis, having as many viable options on the table as possible is crucial. This allows us to select the locations that suit each day’s work without being constrained by charging locations.”
Asked if there were any size constraints for manoeuvring Welch’s electric truck into the charging area at the First Bus depot, Sands said “none at all”. ”There is plenty of space at the Leicester depot, with 84 chargers and a very impressive gantry system,” he added.
A spokesperson from First Bus commented: “We’re thrilled to support Welch’s Transport with our depot facilities, demonstrating how shared infrastructure can serve multiple sectors and contribute to cleaner, greener operations. Partnerships like this are essential in establishing a sustainable network that benefits our communities and the wider economy.”
