TotalEnergies and SSE have signed a binding agreement to form a joint venture named Source, aimed at establishing a significant presence in the electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure market in the UK and Ireland. The new company plans to deploy up to 3,000 high-power charge points to meet the increasing demand from EV and fleet owners for fast and reliable charging solutions.
Over the next five years, Source aims to install up to 3,000 high-power charge points (each 150 kW or more) across 300 EV hubs in the UK and Ireland, targeting a 20% market share. These charging hubs will be strategically located in and around urban areas and will be powered by renewable energy from SSE and TotalEnergies. Several hubs are already under construction, with additional sites currently in the planning stages.
Source will address the need for reliable, ultra-fast charging infrastructure across the UK, driven by the UK government’s zero vehicle emissions mandate for new cars and vans. This mandate highlights the importance of robust power supply infrastructure for EV and fleet owners as a key factor in the decarbonisation of transport.
In Ireland, Source’s initiatives will support the government’s target of having nearly one million electric vehicles on the roads by 2030, fostering consumer confidence in EV charging.
“TotalEnergies is proud to contribute to the development of electric mobility to decarbonise transportation in the UK and Ireland. This venture allows us to extend our network in Europe and establish ourselves as a key player in high-power charging. We aim to offer our customers - both passenger cars and fleets - a nationwide, ultra-fast, and reliable charging service for efficient and stress-free travel. This initiative aligns with our integrated power strategy in the UK, combining renewable and flexible power generation with low-carbon electricity available around the clock,” reported Mathieu Soulas, Senior Vice President of New Mobilities at TotalEnergies,
Neil Kirkby, Managing Director of Enterprise at SSE, added: “SSE is already a leader in decarbonising the UK and Ireland’s power systems, including building the world’s largest offshore wind farm and transforming electricity networks. This agreement will accelerate the progress towards a decarbonised transport system, ensuring that vehicles essential to the economy can operate sustainably and efficiently.”
Freight Carbon Zero has enquired to ask if Source will also be providing HGV charging points and are awaiting a response.
