Tata Motors has extended its research and development (R&D) capabilities by introducing testing facilities for next-generation hydrogen-powered powertrains. This expansion aligns with the company’s aim to “indigenise” hydrogen propulsion technology and underscores its commitment to advancing green mobility solutions, particularly in the commercial vehicle sector.

India’s Tata Motors has announced the expansion of its research and development (R&D) facilities to include testing equipment for a new generation of hydrogen-fueled powertrains. This move is part of Tata Motors’ strategy to develop and “indigenise” hydrogen propulsion technology.

The newly established R&D equipment, located at Tata Motors’ engineering and test centre in Pune, includes an engine test cell for research on hydrogen internal combustion engine (ICE) technology. Additionally, infrastructure has been set up to store and dispense hydrogen for tests involving both hydrogen fuel cells and ICE technology.

Girish Wagh, Tata Motor’s executive director, emphasised the company’s focus on utilising hydrogen technology in the commercial vehicle sector. Hydrogen is expected to play a significant role in the decarbonisation of road freight haulage, the company says. Wagh also connected these R&D efforts to Tata’s overarching goal of localising the production of hydrogen-based powertrains.
