Hyzon Motors has announced the start of production for its 200kW single-stack fuel cell system at its Illinois facility. The company, which manufactures hydrogen fuel cell systems, describes the Bolingbrook site as one of the largest integrated fuel cell production facilities in the United States.

The announcement coincides with National hydrogen fuel cell Day, marking the transition from prototype development to standardized production of fuel cell systems for commercial vehicles.

“Our Bolingbrook facility is one of the largest fully-integrated fuel cell systems production facilities in the United States and the only 200kW single-stack fuel system to be launched into serial production,” said Hyzon Chief Executive Officer Parker Meeks.

Production capabilities

Dr. Bappa Banerjee, Chief Operating Officer, stated the facility can produce 700 fuel cell systems annually over three shifts. The manufacturing process includes:

  • In-line quality control gates
  • Laser and optical vision systems
  • End-of-line performance testing

The company manufactures its proprietary Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA), which Chief Technology Officer Dr. Christian Mohrdieck described as “the core component of a fuel cell.” Mohrdieck added: “This achievement underscores Hyzon’s technological leadership and our commitment to innovation in hydrogen fuel cell development and production.”

Quality certification

Hyzon reports passing an ISO 9001 audit in September 2024 and expects formal certification for its fuel cell manufacturing and design activities in Q4 2024. This follows the company’s announcement last month of production commencement for its Class 8 200kW Fuel Cell Electric Truck.
