Hypnos Beds has introduced two new Volvo FM Electrics through its transport and logistics provider DFDS.

Supplied by Jose Lavarello, key account manager for Volvo Trucks UK & Ireland, the 4x2 curtainside rigid and 4x2 tractor units replace older diesel trucks and will work on mattress and bed furniture deliveries to retail locations, hotels and distribution hubs in London and Milton Keynes. They will be based out of the company’s Princes Risborough factory where they will charge overnight using two Volvo-supplied 43kW AC chargers.

James Ferguson, regional operations manager at DFDS, said: “Introducing these two electric trucks into the Hypnos Beds fleet is an important step in accelerating its ambitious sustainability goals, as well as enhancing the efficiency of its operations.

“Thanks to Volvo’s support – which included installing the necessary charging infrastructure and delivering driver training – we are fully prepared to meet the increasing demand for low-emission road transport solutions, with this partnership reinforcing our shared commitment to providing innovative logistics services and intensifying our decarbonisation efforts.”

DFDS opted for five batteries in the rigid FM and six in the tractor unit. Both have three electric motors which produce 666hp and 2,400Nm of torque. Inside, the FMs feature heated and suspended driver’s seats, dynamic steering, adjustable steering wheel with neck tilt and full air suspension.

Instead of traditional mirrors, the electric trucks are equipped with Volvo’s camera monitoring system. On top of safety features like rain-sensing windscreen wipers, the FMs have forward collision warning with advanced emergency braking, side collision avoidance support, lane departure warning and driver alert support.

Peter Keen, chairman at Hypnos Beds, said: “By integrating these FM Electrics into our logistics operations, we are taking tangible action to ensure that our products are delivered with minimal impact on the planet. Our partnership with DFDS and Volvo Trucks reflects our continued commitment to sustainability, ensuring that our goods reach customers more efficiently and responsibly.”
